Fall is one of my favorite times of year. The season is filled with so many traditions from my childhood and so many fond memories since. As a child I looked forward to creatively carving pumpkins and the tradition of roasting the pumpkin seeds after. Now my children do too. As a teenager I loved fall and the high school football games. I was in the marching band and on crisp fall evenings I can close my eyes and picture the lights of the football game and hear the band playing. As an adult, I have continued old traditions and started new fall activities like heading to the cider mill and visiting the pumpkin patch each year. Fall is a great time of year to get outdoors and have some fun. I’ve made a free Fall Bucket List with some of my favorite fall activities.

Fall Bucket List Ideas:
Pick Apples And/Or Take A Trip To A Cider Mill
Since my niece and nephew were toddlers, they are now in their mid 20’s with children of their own, we’ve been taking the kids in the family to the same cider mill. It’s a wonderful local farm that gets better every year with horse drawn wagon rides through the apple orchard, a corn maze, and a huge pumpkin patch. We always look forward to the fresh hot apple cider donuts, apple pie, and of course, hot apple cider made from the cider press. There’s a gift shop and bakery, a play area for young children, a winery for grown ups, and so much more. It is the perfect time to enjoy seasonal things like a hay ride with caramel apples.
This photo was taken several years ago in the apple orchard, before the little boys had come along. It’s still one of my favorites today. Apple picking is such a fun fall activity!
Plant Bulbs & Trees
If your family enjoys gardening (and what kid doesn’t enjoy playing in the dirt?), fall is the time to plant bulbs to have flowers next spring. Your family can go through catalogs together and pick out their favorites. Not only do you have the fun of planting them, you all get the anticipation of watching them come out next spring. Fall is also a great time to plant trees. Their roots will have all winter to get established before they are called on to supply water during the hot summer. Next year you’ll be enjoying the additional fall colors.
Decorate For Autumn
Your Autumn bucket list provides the perfect opportunity to decorate for fall and particularly for Halloween. Adding anything from spider webs to pumpkins and gourds are fantastic ways to entertain this annual holiday. Halloween decorations are very affordable and can even be found at your local grocery. If you’re a very creative and celebratory family, it’s highly recommended to explore DIY options for making your home more festive.
Go on a Picnic
Chances are your favorite spot to picnic is still available or you can try a new spot! Grab some cozy blankets, yummy treats, and a warm drink. If you have a beach nearby, it should be much less crowded than during the summer. Wherever you go for a picnic, you should also have an opportunity to go on a nature hike. Your kids can collect leaves and look for animal tracks. A picnic is also a great excuse to drive through the countryside and enjoy the leaves turning colors.
Enjoy a Fall Festival
Fall is traditionally the time of harvest, and many towns have festivals dedicated to that theme. Others have street fairs or Oktoberfests with a beer garden or even Day of The Dead Festivals. Chances are good there will be games for the children to play, music to listen to, carnival foods to eat, and arts and crafts to browse and buy. One of the best things about fall festivals is the passing on of traditions like pumpkin picking or diy halloween costumes.
Visit a Farmer’s Market
This time of year most farmer’s markets feature pumpkins or apples. The kids will love picking out the perfect pumpkin to carve into a Jack-O-Lantern, and if you’re inclined to make pumpkin pie, no doubt your family will enjoy eating it. In the fall, many farm markets will have additional fun activities: hay rides, corn mazes, apple bobbing, and maybe even a haunted house.
Go For A Fall Walk Or Scenic Drive And Enjoy The Fall Foliage
One of the best things about the fall season is that the leaves change color and it can be a spectacular show. If your neighborhood has plenty of trees in hues of orange, red, and yellow, get out and enjoy the fall foliage with your kids! If you have countryside near by that bursts to life with color, a country drive to see the fall foliage may be one of the perfect Fun Fall Activities Kids will enjoy.
Play In The Leaves
When the leaves start falling it is a wonderful time for children to be involved in the work of collecting the leaves into a pile. Then they can also be involved in playing in the leaf pile and they will learn that hard work can be worth the effort. Throw a few leaves up in the air yourself- you’ll be surprised how good it feels to pretend to be young and carefree again!
Carve Some Jack O Lanterns
One of the can’t miss fun fall things to do is carve a Jack O’Lantern. They are so fun to make and it is a great way to show off your creativity. You can make this one of your outdoor fall activities because pumpkin carving can get messy! But what better way to enjoy the crisp fall air than while you carve your own little masterpiece. Let everyone make their own. You can even celebrate this spooky season by swapping ghost stories while you are at it.
